Corona Virus: California College of Ayurveda Guidelines

By now you may have heard of the coronavirus (Covid-19). The virus recently entered the United States and so far our government has not yet been able to contain it. While containment is still considered a possibility, it is up to each person to take care of themselves and do what they can to avoid getting sick and when sick, to take the measures that bring about healing. This is a serious issue and appears to be more serious than the flu. However, like the flu, the individuals who needs to be the most concerned are those who are immune compromised. These are individuals who are very old, very young, abusers of drugs and alcohol and those who are already sick with other conditions.
While the disease is in its early stages in the US it is expected to get worse before it gets better. Taking the proper measures now not only protects you but also prevents the spread of the virus - helping create containment.

1. The virus is spread by contact with mucus membranes (eyes, nose, lips). It does not enter through skin.
2. Close contact near someone who sneezes and cough will only infect you if you to them, they cough at you, and you inhale water droplets.

4. The most common means of transmission is touching that surface and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
5. Like the flu, some people will be exposed and not get sick or very sick at all.
6. If you get sick, the outcome depends on the health of your immune system.
7. As of March 2nd, 2020: There are no cases in Nevada County where our school is located. These numbers will increase but right now there is no crisis.
Public Health Tips Maximize Safety
1. Handwashing with soap and water. Run the hands under water for 20 seconds.
2. Anti-sceptic lotions: These need to be 60% alcohol or higher
3. Masks: Simple masks are very effective to prevent touching the lips and nose which most people do 90+ times per day. N95 Masks that are well-fitted completely protect against the virus and may be useful if you are in crowded areas (Rallies, concerts, sports arenas). They are also beneficial if you have the virus as it prevents spread.
4. Nitrile or Latex Gloves: These protect your hands from surfaces and are important if you touch a lot of money or other items touched by large numbers of people (think grocery stores). If you are not wearing gloves you may wish to do the following:
a. Less handshaking, more fist bumps and namaste.
b. Use knuckles on public light switches
c. Use a paper towel when touching a gas pump
d. Avoid commercial door handles. If needed, use your fist or sleeve
e. Look for disinfectant wipes in grocery stores and other public locations
f. Carry hand sanitizer with you
g. Wash clothing regularly. The virus can last a week on clothing and be passed on.
