Christina Applegate Hints at Retirement, Says SAG Awards Will Probably Be Last Awards Show as an Actor
Christina Applegate, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021, revealed her acting career might have already ended. Find out her plans for the future.
<strong>Christina Applegate may have already taken her final bow.
The actress, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the spring of 2021, hinted that her decades-long acting career might be over.
"Right now, I couldn't imagine getting up at 5 a.m. and spending 12 to 14 hours on a set," Applegate told the Los Angeles Times Feb. 7. "I don't have that in me at this moment."
In January, Applegate earned a Screen Actors Guild nomination for her portrayal of Jen Harding on the third and final season of Netflix's Dead to Me--and she further insinuated that the Feb. 26 ceremony could act as a symbolic final chapter.
"It's my last awards show as an actor probably," Applegate revealed, "so it's kind of a big deal."
However, the Married...with Children alum isn't planning on completely leaving the entertainment industry behind. Applegate--who shares daughter Sadie Grace, 12, with husband Martyn LeNoble--said she envisions herself "doing a s--t ton of voice-overs to make some cash to make sure that my daughter's fed and we're homed." =
When it came to the final season of Dead to Me--which co-starred Linda Cardellini as Jen's best friend Judy Hale--it was difficult for Applegate to watch the episodes after they dropped on Netflix in November 2022.
"I don't like seeing myself struggling," she admitted. "I gained 40 pounds because of inactivity and medications, and I didn't look like myself, and I didn't feel like myself."
Eventually, however, she was able to sit down and enjoy the show's swan song.
"At some point I was able to distance myself from my own ego and realize what a beautiful piece of television it was," the 51-year-old noted. "All the scenes I wasn't in were so much fun to see and experience for the very first time."
As Applegate explained, filming Dead to Me's final episodes represented a flip of the script from how things were playing out in real life between her and Cardellini.
"She literally pulled me under her wing and protected me, and took care of me every single day," Applegate said. "The tables were turned. Jen is taking care of her friend who's dying, yet Linda was taking care of me as I was saying goodbye to the person that I'd always known--so part of me was dying."
All three seasons of Dead to Me are available to stream on Netflix.
